A Heritage of BloodIn feudal Kyoto, the monks of the great temples were compelled to take up the martial arts to protect themselves against marauding samurai. In time, these warrior monks -- called sohei -- became the most feared fighting force in Japan...until the shogun destroyed the temples in 1588 and forced the sohei underground. The next generation saw the state behavein a similarly ruthless fashion in its treatment of the fledging Christian movement. This foreign religion was viewed by many -- including the Buddhist sohei -- as a corrupting influence on the culture of Japan. Following the brutal suppression of the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637-1638, many of these peaceful people, like the sohei before them, began to secretly train in the ways of warfare. Today the descendents of these two shadow societies -- the sohei, and the Christian Undosenshi -- find themselves still fighting battles in a war effor they are pledged to for centuries...
